Abstract:

Twenty-one letters (57 p.) from George Sterling, mostly on Bohemian Club stationery, to Grace Warlock, who Sterling addresses as "niece" and "Jazette," at Oaks Resort in Applegate and elsewhere. Letters discuss pets, travels, Warlock's new home in "Wopland" North Beach, San Francisco, Sterling's writing and efforts to stay "on the wagon," High Jinks and other events presumably at Bohemian Grove, social and cultural activities with Grace's mother Beatrice, apparent enclosures of money, Sterling's admiration of Grace's beauty, and similar themes. Most letters are signed "Uncle." One letter, written on Douglas Fairbanks' Thief of Bagdad stationery, describes Hollywood as a quiet, domestic town. Anther mentions seeing The Thief of Bagdad and Sterling observes that little of the work he did for it was used.
Also includes 7 poems (1 addressed to Beatrice Warlock), 2 night letters to Beatrice Warlock (regarding Montague Rainer Clifton Warlock), 1 postcard (possibly from Montague R.C. Warlock), as well as a copy of Yeat's The Lake Isle of Innisfree inscribed by Sterling and a special George Sterling tribute volume of Spring Valley Water Company's publication San Francisco Water. With these are interviews conducted by Harriet Nathan with John Martini and Elizabeth Best Martini (niece of Grace Warlock Best) about Grace Warlock and their discovery of this collection.
